Southampton Shamrock 5K Canceled

The Southampton Village has decided that it can no longer fund overtime for police for events. Events will now be charged for that overtime and we cannot afford the expence.

The economy is effecting us in so many ways that it has changed our way of living.
Everyone is experiencing cutbacks in one way or another and in fact many ways
and even more others. Every person, every business, every level of government
has had to make sacrifices. We are all looking at our budgets and looking where
we can cut back. I believe that in the long run, this is a good thing and it is
important for us all to tighten our belts and get through this.

One way Southampton Village has decided to do this has been to cut police
overtime incurred by events by charging the events for police overtime. This will
provide some stress to many events. For our small winter events that have been
struggling financially, it has become the death toll. I am negotiating with the village
how events can supply volunteers to reduce the need for additional police. I have
been pleased with the offerings from our members to volunteer. We will come up
with a solution, but solutions require meetings and meetings take time. Time has
run out for us as far as our winter races are concerned.

I am continuing to work with the village on a solution for future events and am
confident a solution can and will be found very soon. It’s just a matter of logistics.
Summer races will go on as planned.  Events will require more volunteers to make
them happen.  I am also working on a bigger plan for new fall races and a bigger
solution for our winter and spring races for 2010.

There are many other concerns that need to be addressed that will affect the
running community and the charities we support. Yet the 2009 calendar is shaping
up nicely. New races are being organized for spring, summer and fall. Winter will
end. Spring is on it’s way!

The Last Day of Winter 5K has been changed to the Shamrock 5K since it always falls near St Patricks Day. Back in 1995 we ran the first Southampton Shamrock 3 Mile Run at the same location but with a different course. We ran 3 miles for the shamrock's 3 leafs.

In 2007 we ran the Last Day of Winter 5K  at a frozen Red Creek Park and had to improvise a little.

Can't run the race? Volunteer! We can use your help.
